What is Confirmation?

Confirmation is a class where students have a place to both learn and ask questions about faith. Traditionally, Confirmation is only open to 9th graders, but we also welcome those older students who may have not yet taken the class. There is no cost to participate. Students will learn the basic tenets of their faith and what makes them a Christian (and a part of the PC(USA) family).

The bulk of the class is built around activities and small group discussions with leaders and in May, at the end of our time together, Confirmation class participants will have the option to become members of the church. Additionally, we host a Confirmation Dinner for the students and families celebrating the confirmands’ hard work and their graduation from the class.

What if I don’t want to be a member of Village Church?

Becoming a member is fully optional. Joining the church is not automatic at the end of the course but is a decision each student actively chooses to make. There is no pressure in this decision, just encouragement to make the decision that is right for the individual. Regardless of the decision, all students are recognized for having put time and effort into the class when we celebrate Confirmation Sunday in May. Each student will be awarded a Confirmation certificate at the end of the class which affirms their participation in the class and is recognized by the PC(USA). In addition, students who were not baptized as infants may elect to undergo water baptism on Confirmation Sunday.

What does the program cost?

Nothing. Our Confirmation classes are an integral part of the life of the church and the spiritual development of our youth, and as such, classes are free of charge.

What is the schedule like?

Class will meet every Sunday during the spring semester (Jan 21-May 5, 2024). Students will be assigned writing assignments to complete during the class as well, and students will also assist in writing the liturgy for Confirmation Sunday (May 19, 2024).

Prior to class time, students will watch a short online video by Zach or one of our guest speakers (we’ll email you a link to access the videos a week before they’re due). Then, we will meet weekly on Sunday mornings, 10:30am-12:00pm in Room 232/233 to engage with what we heard. See the full calendar below.

Adult volunteers

Each year, we always need caring, thoughtful adult volunteers to help lead our small groups during Confirmation class. Please email Zach at zach.walker@villagepres.org if you’re interested in participating as an adult volunteer.
