Program Break – August Newsletter

With school starting Thursday, Friday, or Monday (depending on your school district and your grade), we take a little bit of a program break. It allows students and families to get back into the swing of school, while also allowing us to do some planning and breathing before kickoff (on September 11 & 14). But, Sunday school continues, so we will always be in the Loft at 9:30 on Sunday mornings.

And don’t forget a couple of special events that happen during the break: the Sporting KC game on August 20, and Youth Sunday on August 28. Fun times!

Boundary Waters

The Boundary Waters trip returned home last Saturday with lots and lots of stories. One of the reasons I love that trip is because it presents a unique set of challenges to everyone who goes, but it also puts groups in situations to watch out for each other, and to live/survive together away from distractions (including cell service). In that way it is a hybrid of an adventure and a monastic retreat. In that environment a lot of your usual concerns fall away and you can be fully present with each other, in nature, and with God. And it helps to have GORP.

Montreat Midway

We are about halfway through the week at Montreat, and so far we have been enjoying the people, the talks, the weather, and the opportunities to spend time together.

This morning we had a chance to hike to the top of Lookout Mountain to see the sun rise…

… hiked down to our usual breakfast, and heard a thoughtful student share during keynote about brave voices in the church who are seeking to love and embrace others.

After small group time we are planning for another hike to a waterfall west of Asheville on our free afternoon.

We can’t believe we only have two more days before we head back home, but are excited for the time we still have to talk, learn, relax, and grow!

Omaha Mission Trip – Free Day!

Today is the free day on the Omaha Mission Trip! We are going to worship in a couple hours and then will have lunch downtown before going to the zoo!

It has been a whirlwind so far, with opening ceremonies for the College World Series on Friday night, and then our first work day on Saturday. We are working with Rebuilding Together Omaha to do some painting and landscaping – it is hot out there but people are in good spirits!

Here’s a few photos of the trip so far…

Summer Schedule!

This afternoon we finished up our last Youth Week event! We had an amazing week, going all over the city and enjoying some time at Worlds of Fun, Loose Park, volunteering in KCK, and so many other things. Now that Youth Week is finished, we kick off all of our weekly programs, starting THIS Sunday, June 12th. Here’s a list of what we have going on for middle school and high school students all summer long:

                          *High School*
Sunday School – 9:30-10:30am
Sunday mornings we are always up in the Youth Loft and have some great discussions and activities planned!

Around the World in 9 Meals – 6:00-7:30pm
The Gathering service is moving to Sunday nights at 5:00pm for the summer. After the service is over we are going to go to dinner together – each week we will go to a different kind of restaurant: Thai, BBQ, Italian, Southern, Mexican, and more! Come taste the cuisine of the world, all right here in town!

Late Nite – 8-10pm
With no school in the morning it’s a good reason to stay out a little later and have some adventures. There is always a fun activity planned for the night, so come and join us!

(Re)Action – 2:00-4:30pm
Each week we will alternate between volunteering and visiting fun spots in the Kansas City area. Will it be awesome? Yes!

                                 *Middle School*
Sunday School – 9:300-10:30am – Sunday mornings we are always up in the Youth Loft and have some great discussions and activities planned!

Mission Days – 10:30am-2:00pm
Each week we will volunteer in the community, going to different places and lending a helping hand. It is a great way to give back to the community!

View & Chew – 11:00am-1:00pm
Come enjoy lunch and a movie each Thursday! We’ll provide lunch for you while we watch! It’s a great time to hang out during the heat of the day!

Youth Week: Tuesday, Day 3

On Day 3 of Youth Week we have a twofer Tuesday! We will be volunteering in the morning and going to the T-Bones game in the evening. Here are the details:

Morning: Volunteering
Meet at Village at 9:30am and we’ll be back by 12:30pm. We are heading out to Hillcrest Transitional Housing to work in their community garden! Bring a pair of gloves with you, but we will have some extras on hand. It’s a great way to be involved with the community, to work with others, and to contribute to those around you.

Evening: T-Bones Game
Tuesday night we will meet at 6:00pm and go cheer on the minor league baseball team, the T-Bones! Come enjoy big fun at the small park – there’s always something going on, whether you are watching the game, playing basketball by the outfield, or exploring the stadium. The cost is $10, and we’ll be back at about 9:45pm.

Any other way to spend a Tuesday this week is just boring!

Youth Week: Monday, Day 2

The second day of Youth Week, Monday, will find us at Loose Park from 2-4pm. We will meet by the tennis courts and invite people to bring blankets, pets, frisbees, kids they nanny, hammocks, or anything else they want to hang out at the park for a couple of hours.

We’ll bring snacks, beverages, and a few games. Everyone is welcome – come spend a beautiful couple of hours relaxing!

This event is free, but you can always register for it, and any other Youth Week events, by filling out a registration form.

Hope to see you at the park on Monday afternoon!
